Towards a space-borne quantum gravity gradiometer: progress in laboratory demonstration
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recent progress in atom interferometry has lead to a new way to map and monitor the Earth gravity field. Atom interferometer-based instruments may significantly contribute to the understanding of the solid earth, ice and oceans, and dynamic processes in a comprehensive model of our planet. We are funded under the Advanced Technology Component program to develop this technology for a possible flight-based gravity gravimeter. The first step of the development is a demonstration of a laboratory-based gradiometer employing component technologies suitable for a future flight instrument. This paper describes the working principles and technical benefits of atom-wave interferometer-based inertial sensors, and gives a progress report on the development of a quantum gravity gradiometer for space applications at JPL.

Quantum Gravity Gradiometer Sensor for Earth Science Applications
Quantum gravity gradiometers based on atom interferometry hold the promise for greater sensitivity and suitability for Earth science applications. Such instruments can potentially provide not only high resolution mapping of mass distribution both above and below the surface of the planet, but also temporal monitoring of its dynamical processes. These capabilities will significantly advance our ...
متن کاملLocalized spectral analysis of global satellite gravity fields for recovering time-variable mass redistributions
A spatiospectral localization method is discussed for processing the global geopotential coefficients from satellite mission data to investigate time-variable gravity. The time-variable mass variation signal usually appears associated with a particular geographical area yielding inherently regional structure, while the dependence of the satellite gravity errors on a geographical region is not s...
متن کاملPrecision Accelerometers for Gravity Gradient Measurements
An accelerometer, based on a microwave sapphire resonator, is under development for application in a compact gravity gradiometer. This gravity gradiometer potentially can be used in space gradiometry, precision navigation, and geodesy. The principle of operation of the accelerometer is based on measurements of classical springproof-mass displacements, which are converted to phase shifts in the ...
متن کاملSensitive gravity-gradiometry with atom interferometry: progress towards an improved determination of the gravitational constant
We present here the current status of our high-sensitivity gravitygradiometer based on atom interferometry. In our apparatus, two clouds of laser-cooled rubidium atoms are launched in a fountain configuration and simultaneously interrogated by a Raman-pulse interferometry sequence. The system has recently been upgraded and its stability re-evaluated. We also discuss the recent progress of the e...
متن کاملLunar Sub - Surface Objects Using Surface Gravimetric Surveys
Introduction: Surface gravity surveying is a well developed terrestrial geophysical technique, used to detect subsurface density variations, which in turn can reveal subsurface geologic features. Here we perform a feasibility study to determine what major science questions can be answered by a rover-mounted, highly compact gravimeter and gravity gradiometer being designed by Gedex Inc.; a Toron...
